Wisdom Tooth Extraction
A wisdom tooth is also known as your third molar is a tooth at the back corners of your mouth and commonly erupt in the early 20s. They are often impacted under your soft tissues and therefore need a surgical extraction. Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical extraction performed by an experienced oral surgeon to remove one or more of your wisdom teeth.
They can cause a problem in eruption in a few cases, such as;
1. Overcrowding in your mouth doesn’t give them enough space to erupt.
2. They are impacted under soft tissues or underlying bone.
3. They might be damaging the adjacent tooth while erupting in the wrong position.
When a wisdom tooth is impacted or erupting in a wrong position, it may cause the formation of an abscess or a cyst and can damage your tooth root and underlying bone.
When to get wisdom tooth extracted?
Our dentist will examine your mouth and take a full mouth OPG to assess your case.
The wisdom tooth is often extracted when an OPG shows any sign of;
1. Development of cyst or abscess
2. Damage to the adjacent tooth
3. Risk of infection
4. No chance of a proper eruption
In such cases, when a wisdom tooth is removed, it helps to prevent many complicated issues that may arise in the future. Extraction of wisdom tooth is difficult in old age due to bone density, so it is preferred to get it extracted in your early 20s to avoid any inconvenience.
Process of wisdom tooth extraction
Wisdom tooth extraction is a similar process to a normal extraction that requires surgical intervention. Our dentist may administer your local or general anesthesia depending upon the requirement.
Once your tooth and surrounding tissues are numb, he/she will make an incision in your gum and raise a flap to expose your tooth and underlying bone. The severity of the procedure depends upon the depth of impaction of your tooth.
Your underlying bone is removed that is impacting the tooth and your tooth is sectioned into pieces to ease its removal. Once the tooth is removed, any debris is cleaned and your tissues are sutured(stitched) back to their original position. Just like a normal extraction, our dentist puts a gauze over the extraction site to control bleeding and promote clot formation.
What to expect after the wisdom tooth extraction?
Once the anesthesia wears off, you might experience some sort of discomfort and pain which usually subsides with OTC painkillers. Follow the instructions given by your dentist properly to ensure better and quick healing.
Eat soft food for a day or two and rinse your mouth with warm salt water after every meal. Avoid spitting and sucking from straws as they may dislodge the clot and interferes with the healing.
Similarly, avoid smoking for the next 72 hours to avoid any complications.
Our dentist at Zia Dental Care may set up an appointment to remove your sutures. If you experience any pain or swelling that worsens with time, immediately contact your dentist as it may be the sign of an infection.

1. When do I need to get my wisdom teeth out?
• Healthy
• Grown in completely (fully erupted)
• Positioned correctly and biting properly with their opposing teeth
• Able to be cleaned as part of a daily oral hygiene routine.
However, many times wisdom teeth don’t have room to grow properly and can cause many problems. Erupting wisdom teeth can grow at various angles in the jaw, sometimes even horizontally. Problems which can be encountered if the wisdom tooth is not removed are:
• Jaw damage: Cysts can form around the new teeth. If they aren’t treated, they can hollow out your jaw and damage nerves.
• Sinus Issues: Problems with wisdom teeth can lead to sinus pain, pressure, and congestion.
• Inflamed Gums: Tissue around the area can swell and may be hard to clean.
• Cavities: Swollen gums can create pockets between teeth that help bacteria grow and cavities form.
• Alignment of wisdom tooth: Impacted wisdom teeth can cause problems with crowding of other teeth and even make treatment to straighten other teeth necessary.
Our dentist will look at the shape of your mouth and the position of your teeth to make a decision whether you can keep it or it should be extracted according to the situation of your wisdom tooth. Your age plays a role too.
