Dental X-Ray
- A dental X-ray is a diagnostic tool used in dentistry to capture images of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding tissues. There are several types of dental X-rays, including:
- Bitewing X-rays: These capture images of the upper and lower teeth in one jaw. They are used to detect cavities between the teeth and assess the health of the alveolar bone supporting the teeth.
- Periapical X-rays: These capture images of an entire tooth, from the crown to the end of the root. They are used to detect problems with the roots of teeth and the surrounding jawbone.
- Panoramic X-rays: These capture a wide, two-dimensional image of the entire mouth, including the upper and lower jaws, teeth, and temporomandibular joints. They are used to assess the overall health of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures.
- Cephalometric X-rays: These capture images of the head and neck to assess the relationship between the jaws, teeth, and surrounding structures. They are used to plan orthodontic treatment.
- Dental X-rays use a small amount of ionizing radiation to produce images, which are captured on X-ray film or a digital sensor. The exposure to radiation is considered safe, but dentists take precautions to minimize the patient’s exposure, such as using lead aprons to protect the patient’s body.
- Dental X-rays are an important diagnostic tool for dentists to diagnose and treat various oral health problems. They provide valuable information about the structure and position of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding tissues, allowing dentists to develop effective treatment plans.
OPG & CPEH X-RAYS
- A dental OPG (Orthopantomogram) and CEPH (Cephalometric) X-ray are two types of dental imaging used to capture images of the mouth, jaws, and surrounding structures.
- Orthopantomogram (OPG): This is a panoramic X-ray that captures a wide, two-dimensional image of the entire mouth, including the upper and lower jaws, all of the teeth, and the temporomandibular joints. OPGs are used to assess the overall health of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures and to detect problems such as impacted teeth, jaw tumors, and jawbone abnormalities.
- Cephalometric X-ray (CEPH): This type of X-ray captures images of the head and neck to assess the relationship between the jaws, teeth, and surrounding structures. CEPH X-rays are commonly used in orthodontics to plan and monitor treatment for conditions such as overbite, underbite, and crowding.
- Both OPGs and CEPH X-rays use a small amount of ionizing radiation to produce images, which are captured on X-ray film or a digital sensor. As with other types of dental X-rays, exposure to radiation is considered safe, but precautions are taken to minimize the patient’s exposure, such as using lead aprons to protect the patient’s body.
- OPG and CEPH X-rays are important diagnostic tools for dentists and orthodontists to diagnose and treat various oral health problems. They provide valuable information about the structure and position of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding tissues, allowing healthcare professionals to develop effective treatment plans.

These images help your dentist identify any oral issues you might be facing, such as cavities, tooth decay, and impacted or dead teeth.
The dental radiography (x-ray) may sound complex, but they are just standard tools and are necessary, just like cleaning your teeth so that you can take care of your oral health ideally.

What is an OPG?
An OPG (Orthopantomagram) is a panoramic dental X-ray of the upper and lower jaw. It is also known by the proprietary name Panorex or Orthopantomagraph. It is a flattened two-dimensional view of a mouth from ear to ear. Panoramic x-rays allow images of multiple angles to be taken to make up the composite panoramic image, where the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw) are in the viewed area. The structures that are outside the viewed area are blurred. At the start of your dental treatment, our dentist will likely take an OPG.
An OPG shows the number, position, and growth of all the teeth including those that have not yet surfaced or erupted through the gum. It is different from the small close up x-rays that our dentists take of individual teeth. It shows less fine detail, but a much broader area of view. This can be particularly useful to check hard to see areas like wisdom teeth or the development of a child’s jaw and teeth
Should I be worried about Radiations?
This is the concern of many patients that come to Zia Dental Care. The amount of radiation patients exposed to is minimal. • Complete view of tooth roots
• Assessment of the health of bone around the teeth
• Identify periodontal diseases
• Evaluation of the status of developing teeth
• Identify tumors within oral tissue
Are dental X-Rays safe for kids?
Children are generally most susceptible to getting cavities, dental X-rays may often be recommended at every six-month appointment. That said, some kids may need scans less frequently (every two or three years) if their teeth and gums are healthy. The good news for kids’ oral health is that dental X-rays are safer now than they have ever been. Many dentists now use digital X-rays that give off 80% less radiation than film X-rays.
Why are dental X-ray important?

Dental X-ray is used in combination with a physical examination to diagnose your dental problems. If our dentist diagnoses any issue with your oral health by checking your scans, they can readily recommend the treatment plan according to your dental problem.
Why do I need different types of X-rays?
There are different types of dental x-rays, each with different purposes and benefits. Our patients may need different types of x-rays to create a complete assessment of their oral health.
Bitewing x-rays are the most common, and they are so-called because of the plastic wing you bite on to hold the film in place while the x-ray is taken. This type of x-ray shows molars and bicuspids, where cavities are most likely to form.
There is also a periapical x-ray that shows an entire tooth all the way to the root. OPG which is panoramic x-rays that display the entire mouth, including both jaws; and a variety of other x-rays with specific purposes. Occlusal x-ray provides a visual of the floor or roof of the mouth to highlight children’s tooth development
Is Dental X-ray safe in pregnancy?
Research has confirmed that dental X-rays are safe for pregnant women and as well as for their baby. Other research has also shown that it’s safe for pregnant women to undergo dental treatment with local anesthetics. That said, you should always consult our dentist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before you get a dental X-Ray.
